Trainer Tips with Joe PetersonOctober 1, 2019 Imagine you are driving down the road at night and all of sudden you see a big brown furry object with a white stick-like object on top of its head in the middle of the road. Your reaction time will determine if you’re going to spend thousands of dollars on repairs, or just simply experience a spike in your heartrate. An alternate point of view would be whether you will be able to catch a flying object or allow the object to smack you in the face causing a bruising effect before a picture day. Your reaction time is influenced by the speed and accuracy of your cognitive abilities, and your cognition is influenced by factors such as diet and overall physical health. Understanding how these factors work together can go a long way into improving your reaction time and to help you save money and embarrassment. |

Perkville Fitness Challenge: April 2019April 5, 2019 The Ergometer (a.k.a. Rowing Machine) The rowing machine, also called an ergometer or “erg” for short, is a great full body workout. While it is used very often by rowers, it can be a great machine for cross training and has become increasingly popular in CrossFit workouts. Loren Howard (USA) holds the world record for the most meters in 1 minute with 430m rowed in 2019. The muscles used in a complete rowing stroke on the erg include hamstrings, quads, calves, glutes, front and side abdominals, chest, shoulders, biceps, triceps, and mid and lower back. The rowing stroke is made up of 60% lower body, 20% core, and 20% arm muscles. |

Trainer Tip FebruaryFebruary 1, 2018 Dress code do’s and don't’s for winter workouts Winter can be long and brutal in the Northeast, but don't let that stop you from traveling outdoors to meet your fitness goals. While being outdoors for an extended period of time, it is important for one to maintain core body temperature and provide protection from cold air and freezing snow. The rule of thumb is to dress in three layers: Inner, middle, and outer layer. Here are a few tips on how to accomplish this if you choose to transition your workouts outdoors:

Gym EtiquetteJanuary 16, 2018 As we begin 2018, we ask that you take some time to review ways to make the experience at Island Health & Fitness a positive one for you and all of our members. Tis the season for newbies, resolutioners and all our regulars to combine in the facility. We have some basic etiquette that will help make the experience better for everyone. 10 Rules of Etiquetter: 1. Yikes, sweat… wipe it up. We all agree that it is gross to get onto a machine and find sweat all over it. Also, it is flu season. So to help you and others have a better experience, we ask that you wipe down the equipment following use with the cleaning products provided at stations throughout the club.
